Today we arrived in the volcanic island group called the Krakatoa Archipelago, which is comprised of four islands, Sertung, Panjang (Lesser Krakatoa), Rakata (Greater Krakatoa) and Anak Krakatoa (“Child of Krakatoa”).
This famous region is the site of the world’s loudest noise, when on August 27, 1883, the Krakatoa became the deadliest and most destructive volcanic event in recorded history. Over 70% of the island of Krakatoa and its surrounding archipelago were destroyed as it collapsed into a caldera.
We steamed around the islands and landed at Rakata before heading northwest for further adventures in Indonesia.
