South Plaza is a very small volcanic uplift along the coast of Santa Cruz Island. As we approach we are treated to a kaleidoscope of reds, greens, and oranges as the vegetation makes this place come alive with color. As we head inland there appears to be a Galapagos land iguana under every single Opuntia prickly pear cacti. This is one of the densest populations of Galapagos land iguanas in the archipelago. There are so many land iguanas that they have overlapped with a breeding population of marine iguanas and have produced hybrids which look like zebra iguanas with a mix of grey and black strips upon their backs.

Heading to an elevated cliff we face a high air traffic area with Galapagos shearwaters, red billed tropic birds, frigate birds, and swallow tailed gulls fliying above us as they continue about their busy lives. Along the path we encounter a bachelor sea lion colony where young male sea lions can congregate without the constant stress of trying to enter a dominant male’s territory. Possibly after building up their weight they may  have their own territory one day.

Upon our return to our floating home we proceed to cannon ball off the ship as we cool ourselves in this crystalline sea. Captain Pablo navigates the National Geographic Islander towards Santa Fe island and new discoveries. We divide and conquer our curiosity as we head out to snorkel and kayak along this rugged volcanic coastline. Pacific green sea turtles accept us in their world and we meet diamond sting rays, white tipped reef sharks, and yellow tailed surgeon fish along the way. Kayakers view massive Opuntia prickly pear “trees” along the cliffs with an occasional turtle popping its head above the surface for a breath of sea air.

After a costume change we head out onto this incredible stage of life as we hike inland finding prehistoric Santa Fe land iguanas and lazy sea lions taking in the last of the afternoon sun.

Returning to the ship I find smiles upon the faces of our travelers as the last sunlight glows along with the emotions of all.
