Today we explored more of the island of Bawean. We started our exploration by visiting the endemic and endangered hog deer in their enclosure in the mountains. There are believed to be less than 250 hog deer in the wild. We continued along the roads, observing beautiful rice fields in the village of Gunungteguh. We enjoyed an incredible cultural performance and local food tasting. The afternoon was filled with snorkelling and diving, and we observed some very healthy reefs. To top it all off, the day ended with the spectacular National Geographic Orion crew show.

Madura Island, Indonesia
After last night’s crew show we had a wonderful leisurely morning. Adam talked about the different fishing methods before we enjoyed brunch, then we disembarked for our cultural experience in the town of Sumenep. We were presented with elaborate costumes and dances of several groups, including a wedding ceremony as it is done in this part of Indonesia. This was followed by a local buffet with the finest delicacies. There was also an opportunity to buy handmade sarongs or a Kris, a typical Indonesian dagger for which the area is famous. We listened to a presentation by Birgit about Bali before cocktail hour started. A perfectly prepared dinner rounded out our day, which was filled with rich experiences.

We started the day with an incredible snorkeling session. The reef was the most vibrant we had ever seen, teeming with life. The array of colors from the corals was breathtaking, and we encountered several species of fish and corals that were entirely new to us. It was a remarkable experience exploring such a rich and thriving underwater ecosystem. After our morning adventure, we enjoyed a delicious Mexican lunch. The flavors were rich and satisfying, providing the perfect fuel after a morning in the water. The day ended on a high note with the crew’s evening show. The performance was filled with music, laughter, and dancing. It was a lively and entertaining way to wrap up an already amazing day, leaving everyone in high spirits. Kia orana e kia manuia!
