Today is last full day of our expedition in the Peruvian Upper Amazon, and we had several activities and choices. Before breakfast taking advantage of the early hours of the day we explored Zapote Caño by skiffs or by kayaks. We had many rewards, for from the very beginning we spotted many bird species and enjoyed the magical peacefulness of the surroundings.
After breakfast we went back to the river, but this time to visit Urarinas Community, which is located at the entrance of the Zapote Caño. After walking for ten minutes we arrived at this painteresque village. Many children were around. Their curiosity, cheerfulness, and naiveté were a tonic for all of us. We shared a great time with the village people looking around and witnessing how simple but beautiful life can be in such remote location. Soon after all of us were on board we started a long journey navigating towards our next destination for the afternoon activities. Just before lunch we learned how to prepare the most famous and traditional Peruvian drink, the Pisco sour. This now iconic cocktail was prepared following the recipe provided by our friendly bartender German.
Late in the afternoon we explored Supay Caño either by skiff riding or kayaking. We explored this rather narrow creek accompanied by the beauty of the huge green walls of dense vegetation that grow along the banks. A double rainbow was seen for a long time creating a magical setting for photography. We arrived at a paradisiacal lagoon at sunset. In this place with the engine off we observed fiery red and orange colors in the horizon. The sunset was spectacular! It made us dream about a better future and gave us inspiration to protect our blue planet. After all these days that gave us so much joy and understanding of the mighty Amazon, our visitors this week will carry it in their hearts and minds forever.
