The rain forest has been revealing itself little by little during this week, giving us water only during our breaks when we are on board the Delfin II. Most days have been dry and sunny, which is great for exploring the forest.
This morning, we headed into Supay Caño and the surrounding forest for the morning exploration. This part of the forest is also flooded, and the level of the water continues to rise. Today, we were able to explore parts of the forest that are not accessible during the low water season. This morning, we visited a part of the forest that hosts a diversity of swamp birds such as horned screamers, jacanas, and other types of colonial birds, such as yellow rumped caciques and sand colored hawks.
In the afternoon, we explored the forest of the dead trees in Flor de Castaña. All throughout this forest, the water is black. The reflection of the forest is breath taking, because the forest and the sky are perfectly mirrored. The dead trees are a magnet for woodpeckers and a diversity of parrot species, that use the holes in the trees for their nests.
At the end of the ride into the heart of the dead forest, we started our journey back to the Delfin II. With pisco sours in hand and a beautiful reddening sunset in the western sky, we celebrated the end of an amazing expedition in the upper amazon.
