The entire day was spent on land – and a very different day it was! We focused on the giant tortoises of Galapagos. Those brought up in captivity in the Fausto Llerena Giant Tortoise Rearing Center as well as their wild highland counterparts.
Of course with there being some degree of civilization on Santa Cruz, our guests could witness and partake in island life. A strange situation, as only three percent of the total land area here is for human settlement while the remaining ninety-seven is allocated on behalf of the national park. But over the years, living inside a national park becomes par for the course for the younger generations, as they know nothing else growing up. So their awareness of how important it is to live a sustainable lifestyle is made the norm. If nothing else, they are teaching their parents the significance of minimizing human impacts on the environment.
