This great week in the Galápagos was coming to an end, but we still had some adventures coming our way.
After breakfast, we headed out to enjoy the wonders of this location called Punta Pitt on the northern point of the island. We boarded boats for a short ride along the coast, where we saw birds, sea lions, some marine iguanas, and other creatures.
A wet landing at a brownish beach with many sea lions marked the beginning of our expedition on an island known for its unique geological formations and animals that can only be found here. San Cristobal lava lizards and mockingbirds came to pose for the paparazzi at almost every step and many Darwin’s finches hopped around too.
After walking through a riverbed formed after heavy rains in the past and present, we reached a vantage point from where we could see the ocean and the beach with all those sea lions starting to move around.
Following an ashy path, we finally got to a location where red-footed boobies nest. We saw a few but that was enough to appreciate how beautiful they are with their incredible red feet and striking blue beaks. Some were still in their fluffy coats, waiting for their parents to come back with a meal from the ocean, rich in fish of all kinds.
On our return to the beach, sea lions were there as though waiting to entertain us in many different ways, like posing for pictures, barking, swimming like dolphins, and so forth. Some of our guests, especially the kids, had great fun bodysurfing in the big waves breaking nicely onto the beach.
After a great morning at Punta Pitt, we returned onboard for a break and for lunch to recover from all the action.
The afternoon arrived and after a recovering siesta, we got ready for the last underwater excursion of the week. This was a very promising one in terms of sharks. This is one area where we were likely to see more of them than at any other place.
As soon as we entered the water, we saw them. Some sharks came very close as they are more curious than they are dangerous. Many Galápagos sharks swam just underneath our feet. We showed them a lot of respect and gave them the space and protection they need as they are the rulers of the ocean. It was also amazing to snorkel with hammerheads because they are normally found in deeper waters.
A great sunset concluded this beautiful day and also this incredible week in the Galápagos Islands.
