For the first time since we left Seattle, we awoke with National Geographic Quest docked at a port. It was our much-anticipated day ashore in Petersburg. This planned stop was a jam-packed day of exciting events. Three separate seaplanes departed from the channel this morning to take some of our guests on a glacier viewing. It was a dream come true to explore these shrinking wonders from a bird’s-eye view. Throughout the morning, shifts of bicycle tours snaked through the small downtown to a lone sandy beach lookout and boardwalk. Guests meandered along the tree-lined walkway with moss dripping down from the branches.

We explored the fishing docks, strolling up and down the piers amongst the active commercial vessels. Leaning over the side of the floating dock, we peeked into the underwater world. While keeping our feet firmly on the cement, we spotted Dr. Seuss-like anemones underwater. Talking with the locals, we caught a glimpse into the life of an Alaskan fisherperson. We learned about the abundant seafood fisheries that make Petersburg, “The town that fish built.”

After a series of presentations by our brilliant naturalists, guests hurried to the dining room for an unlimited dining experience that featured fresh Dungeness crab and pork ribs. As the boat left, it was directed towards a breathtaking sunset. A stunning rainbow crept across the sky behind the boat. A perfect end to a perfect day.
