National Geographic Resolution ventured through sea ice in the early morning. Between large floating pieces, the phytoplankton colored the ice with shades of green and yellow as we sailed toward Marguerite Bay.
After breakfast, the expedition team went scouting for our first landing at Jenny Island, and a solo Adelie penguin paid us a visit on the landing site. Meanwhile, a huge iceberg broke into several pieces, rolling on itself, and nearby, a small haul of elephant seals rested on the ancient perched beaches. Guests had the opportunity to hike on higher beaches on the pebbles, encountering several species of lichens on the way.
In the afternoon, we landed at Bongrain Point on Pourquoi Pas Island where both a visit to an Adelie penguin colony and a hike on the moraine near the glacier were proposed. Arriving at the colony, we had the chance to see the first baby Adelie penguins of the year, which was a very special moment. The sun also made an appearance in the afternoon, allowing us to enjoy a scenic cruise between icebergs during recap and dinner.
