Melon colored sky, mists rising from dark water, sharp exhalation of whale’s breath. It’s a quiet morning in the coastal lagoon near Boca de Soledad, the mouth of solitude. California gray whale mothers and their calves are resting all around the National Geographic Sea Bird, as the cool desert air begins to warm and the first whale watching group departs the vessel.
We talk about the perils along the route of the long migration that these gentle giants will soon undertake, and enjoy the interaction of the mother whales with their calves. The youngsters are strong and curious, sliding off their mother’s backs and rostrums. With so many whales in close proximity, it seems like a play date.
Our travels together through this land of desert and sea have been filled with immeasurable memories. From desert blooms to prickly cactus, exotic birds and frenetic sea lions, bottlenose dolphins, the green flash, blue whales, humpback whales, sunset at land’s end, common dolphins, to those amazing heart opening California gray whales.
We offer our best wishes for a safe journey north to all our guests and a safe journey to the wonderful California gray whales too…
