This expedition has been one day after another of incredible experiences. Each day we ask ourselves what could possibly compare to the previous day, and yet every day we seem to come away with that same feeling: How can we ever top this?
Today was our last day in Antarctica. At the end of our last excursion, we would be heading back to Ushuaia and the end of our journey. So, when we woke up early to view the famous scenery of the Lemaire Channel, we never expected what fate would have in store for our last day.
The channel lived up to its reputation as we viewed the spectacular scenery. We then headed to Port Lockroy, a museum and post office run by the British Antarctic Survey. There, besides visiting the gift shop, we were treated to one last penguin colony and some wonderfully photogenic seals.
The icing on the cake was the experience we had in the Gerlache Strait, where we encountered some killer whales chasing down a Gentoo penguin. Hard to know who to root for but, in the end, the killer whales won. A most dramatic end to our expedition to the white continent.
