The morning came extra early this morning, as our Expedition Leader Rab woke us up at 6:20 a.m. with an announcement of killer whales off the bow. Only those who were already there, or made a quick dash to the forward lounge, were rewarded with a view of these apex predators, as they were moving fast in the opposite direction. However, it was a good thing we got up and going regardless, as the first Zodiacs left the ship with sleepy-eyed passengers for the Le Conte Glacier Ice Garden at about 7:00 a.m.

The cool morning air woke us up as we made our way to these gigantic bergs, suspended out of the water more than usual, as many were grounded on the terminal moraine of the glacier. After spending an awe-inspiring 90 minutes traversing carefully around the icebergs, guests were treated to an appetizing brunch in the dining room.

After filling our grumbling bellies with delicious food, Paul North educated us all on the interesting life of a commercial fisherman/woman in Alaska, as we made our way to Petersburg. After a short wait, it was time to disembark the ship and guests made their way to a variety of choices to round out their day. Some ventured into town to explore the quaint and quintessential Alaska fishing community of Petersburg, others went flightseeing over the glacier and Stikine Icefield, and many opted for the muskeg/bog walk on neighboring Kupreanof Island. Bikes were also available for those who wanted a quicker way to explore Mitkof Island, the land upon which Petersburg sits.

After a rousing cocktail hour and recap, guests were heard all over the dining room, cracking into the delectable Dungeness crab, as we feasted upon this locally caught crustacean, rounded out with short ribs, salad, and corn on the cob. Dessert drew us all into the forward lounge so we could get a sneak peek at the video chronicle of our trip to date. What a wonderful way to review and remember our amazing adventures in Alaska!
