The day began with National Geographic Resolution sailing into Hornsund on the southern tip of Spitsbergen. We spent the morning hiking the shoreline of Gashamna. Shining like diamonds, ice lined the shoreline, and snow flats stretched into the distance in a Hoth-like setting. With full sun and shimmering ice, there was no dark side to this landing. In the afternoon, the ship took up position at Samarinvagen. Kayak, we did! Everyone had a chance to kayak in doubles or solo. We spotted bearded seals sleeping next to the fast ice. Using the force of the Zodiacs, we cruised through pancake ice for stunning views of birds. Even with the cool winds, everyone was a real “storm trooper,” and we had a great adventure. May this fourth day of May be with you!
