San Josecito Beach and Corcovado National Park, Osa Peninsula

The first day of the New Year began in splendid style, as we commenced our explorations of the Osa peninsula, perhaps the most remote corner of Costa Rica. We witnessed a beautiful sunrise and began heading ashore early this morning for a whole array of activities; horseback riding, swimming, snorkeling, short nature walks and longer nature walks, or perhaps just relaxing in the shade on a gorgeous beach. The morning ended all too quickly, but not before some of us got some great views of Scarlet macaws flying along the coast and then feeding in some Tropical Almond trees right on the beach!

Once back aboard we enjoyed a taco buffet lunch as we re-positioned the ship to one of the two entrances to Corcovado National Park, neither entrance being accessible by road! We took Zodiacs to shore and split into groups, some walking along the level forest trail in search of wildlife, others chose to walk to a series of waterfalls, also of course hoping to see wildlife. Neither group was disappointed as this a true example of a tropical rainforest and the heat and humidity levels on the trails were exactly what you would expect in such an ecosystem. This heat and humidity made the waterfall pools a real delight as the water was so cool and refreshing, - it was a great way to reinvigorate ourselves.

We all came back aboard for cocktails, recap and were treated to a fantastic green flash as the sun set on a great and full first day of 2007.
