The Sea Lion was docked at Pier Two at the extreme western end of town. Because of the distance we decided to use the newly restored city trolley to move forty of our guests from Pier Two to the Maritime Museum. This brawny 20 ton trolley was recently restored to its original condition by a team of local volunteers.
The trolley was locally constructed 85 years ago, and then purchased by an art museum in Texas. The city of Astoria is "borrowing" the trolley for the next five years, during the buildup leading to the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The city officials hope this trolley and several other "facelift" projects will add to the vintage look of Astoria, and draw many tourists to the Astoria area in increasing numbers during the next six to seven years.
Our guests enjoyed the trolley immensely, from its beautifully restored interior to the two local Astorian residents who drove the trolley and gave commentary along its route -- which runs the full length of the waterfront of the city of Astoria.
