Los Islotes, Isla Espirítu Santo

After the sunrise the Sea Lion was escorted by a group of long-beaked common dolphins. This group was busy feeding and did not pay attention to us. We left them behind and arrived at Los Islotes. Of the eleven breeding sea lions colonies in the Sea of Cortes, Los Islotes is the most southern one. We were delighted by the playful displays of the young sea lions in the water. Even we got a little bit scared when one of them jumped on one of our Zodiacs. This little pup tried hard to become a special guest with us, but we had to scare him away. In this lovely snorkeling spot we where amazed also by a big school of herring, the Mexican goatfish, the leopard grouper, the hawk fish and the beautiful star fish. We also marvelled at the playful sea lions while snorkeling with them.

While having lunch we started heading north cruising to find some whales. We searched the whole San Jose Channel. In the north end of this channel we found a big group of long-beaked common dolphins. The group we found was dispersed and they were not heading in one direction. We could see them all around our ship in small groups. After spending some time with them we saw that they were gathering a big school of fish. While the dolphins where eating this schooling fish, they where joined by many fish eating birds; such as brown pelicans, brown boobies, blue-footed boobies, cormorants, frigate birds and different species of gulls. We watched their feasting until sunset. Our perfect day ended with a wonderful dinner while heading south to our final destination at La Paz.
