Isla Santa Catalina

We woke up to the silhouettes of the hills of Santa Catalina Island, where the sun shyly rose behind the clouds. It was a perfect morning for a long hike to the top of the surrounding hills. We followed the natural history staff through the boulders and then into the sandy arroyo up moving over rocks and soils that were at least three million years old. A beautiful view of the huge cardon and barrel cactus’ valleys gratified our efforts. We took time to absorb the wilderness of the island and to feel the cool breeze before returning to the rocky beach, where beautiful scenery continued for all hikers.

After lunch we boarded the Zodiacs to enjoy a narrated cruise along the coast of the island. Some of us opted to spend the afternoon snorkeling in the refreshing waters by “Elephant” rock. Our bravery was gratified by the so many fishes and clear water. The underwater world presented several schools of king angel fish, barber fish, beaubrummel, damselfishes, parrotfish, amongst many others.

Later in the afternoon, back at our handsome ship, we could enjoy a relaxation and stretching class while some of us just relaxed with the sight of the fabulous landscape and sunset.

Cocktails and recap brought us more insights of the marine life that thrives under our own feet. To top the day, after dinner, William Lopez from the natural history staff, presented an illustrated talk about the Mexican drink of excellence: Tequila! After sampling some of the many choices and brands offered by our skilled bartender, we drifted to our cabins to dream of another beautiful day in the Gulf of California.
