Our observations of gray whales this afternoon were the best for the journey. Subadult animals like the one pictured here have been common, but because of tidal changes or some unknown factor, three cow and calf pairs as well as numerous other adults came into the area. Opposing winds and tides caused 3-foot waves that may have resulted in all the "spy-hopping" on the last Zodiac excursions of the day. To see the most, a person just has to spend time out with the whales at every opportunity.
