During the afternoon we hiked and kayaked around a small island called George Island. The forest was carpeted with soft, lush mosses in every shade of green, and from the kayaks we saw orange, pink, red and purple sea stars, anemones, and delicate, elegant jellyfishes. As we departed George Island we passed through a narrow cut between islands called Inian Pass. Currents here can be strong, but today it was calm. Layers of islands, mountains and hills faded into the sea horizon of the Pacific Ocean.

This morning we awoke in the company of about a dozen humpback whales. Eight of the whales swam in tight formation, first to the left, then to the right, apparently looking for schools of herring or other small fish to feed upon.
