Los Islotes, Isla Espiritu Santo

Los Islotes is an important California Sea Lion Breeding colony which is located at the Northern end of Isla Espiritu Santo. Here is where we spent the morning getting a close look at these playful animals and interacting with them in their own underwater environment. Our first activity was to cruise around the islets with our Zodiacs. Sea lions were not only a main attraction, but also the several species of birds that live here like great blue herons, peregrine falcons, blue-footed boobies and pelicans among others.

For the more adventurous, snorkeling near the sea lion colony was an amazing experience. Thousands of sardines surrounded us while bigger fish darted from the deep to prey upon them. The playful sea lions seemed to have as much fun with us as we had with them as they surprised us by suddenly appearing right in front of our faces in a curious and playful attitude.

Later on, we sailed south to Bahia Bonanza, A beautiful long sandy beach located at the southern end of Isla Espiritu Santo. We launched our kayaks to explore the shoreline, where the desert sinks into the ocean. After kayaking, by walking through the island we could take a last taste of the living desert of Baja California Sur.
