After our morning ashore exploring the fishing town of Petersburg, we were heading north into Fredrick Sound when Captain Dwayne Stephens spotted a killer whale in the distance. As we approached for a closer look, we found not one, but an entire family group of killer whales. In the pod there was a large male with his tall dorsal fin, at least two females with young, and another solitary female.
We slowed the ship and stayed with them for nearly an hour as they moved along. On several occasions they swam very close to the Sea Bird, affording us excellent views of all of the individuals including the juveniles that were swimming alongside their mothers. We got to watch them for some time before leaving for our next destination, Point Adolphus.
