Marine mammal exploring near Isla Carmen & Isla Danzante

Today was one of those days here in Baja why most of us staff return year after year, and many guests quickly fall in love with the place as well. A morning of marine mammal and bird overload, and an afternoon of exploring a gorgeous island both above and below made for a wonderful day.

We awoke this morning to a spectacular sunrise and marine mammals galore. Before breakfast we had already spotted two species of dolphins and three species of whale, including the largest of all! Blue whales were everywhere and we enjoyed close views of many different individuals. Repeatedly we had animals surfacing incredibly close to our ship in glassy flat water, and some even showed their massive flukes. A few humpbacks appeared, a single Bryde’s Whale, and then a number of Fin Whales completed the morning with a great comparison between the two largest creatures to live on our planet. I doubt if you could see a better diversity and abundance of marine mammals anywhere else!

After lunch we went ashore at Danzante Island and first set off to explore the waters around it. Snorkelers were rewarded with clear water and a myriad of fish, while kayakers enjoyed the many tranquil coves to duck into. We then followed different trails to various small vistas on the island, and enjoyed panoramic views of the Baja peninsula.

When we returned to the ship, ceviche and cocktails on the sun(set) deck allowed for reflection on a perfect day. I can’t wait for tomorrow!
