Zapote River & Supay Caño
Today was our last full day in the Upper Amazon region of Peru, and we decided to go out before breakfast with our nature lovers. The early hours of the day are the best for wildlife sightings, and we were rewarded from the very beginning because we spotted monkeys, many species of birds, and the odd-looking pink dolphins, which came very close to our skiffs.
Some guests decided to explore the area by kayaking. This unique experience allowed our guests to be very close to the animals observing them in their natural hidden world.
After breakfast we went back to the same place because in the morning there was not enough time to explore it in its totality, and this time we had a small group of monk saki monkeys that were jumping from tree to tree. It was a very special moment in the rain forest. On our way back to the ship we made a quick stop at a very small native community to see their handicraft work.
Soon after we started to sail towards our next destination for the afternoon activities. Before lunch we learned how to make a Peruvian classical cocktail; the Pisco sour with our friendly bartender Gaston.
For the afternoon we offered a skiff ride or kayaking once again at Supay Caño. We explored some secretive lagoons, which are formed at this time of the year. All of them were covered with lilies and many other aquatic plants.
This area has many small rivers that connect with many other lagoons, the exploration of this place would be almost impossible without the help of our local naturalists. These people have been connected with nature since they were born and now they are here to show us their homeland.
As we were coming back to the ship, the fiery colors in the horizon were just magical, the latter combined with the typical Amazon vegetation and the sound of hundreds of birds, insects and monkeys was just unbelievable.
Another magical day in the wilderness of the Amazon, this place will inspire us with many good thoughts to be better inhabitants of our blue planet.
