The ship departed at 1700 hours with guests on deck to see the sights of Belem, with its ancient tower (see the photo). The impressive monument to the Discoverers commemorates the Golden Age of Portugese history when men like Bartholomew Diaz, Vasco de Gama and Cabral built new trading routes for Portugal in the east by sea. They had been trained in Prince Henry the Navigator's navigation school at Sagres, our destination for tomorrow.

Arriving guests had a full day tour of the city of Lisbon in perfect late summer weather. Places visted included the old Alfama quarter, with its narrow winding streets reminiscent of its Moorish origins, and the St. Jeronimo Monastery, which survived the 1755 earthquake.
