On the first full day of our expedition aboard National Geographic Sea Lion we entered Endicott Arm early and sailed toward our destination, Dawes Glacier. It was an uncharacteristically warm and beautiful blue-sky day in southeast Alaska. The fjord was littered with ice sculptures that had calved from the glacier and were melting in the water. Huge icebergs were evidence that there had been several large calving events in the recent past. A visit to the tidewater glacier in our Zodiacs was an exciting and new experience for most. After the visit we sailed back down the fjord to Stephens Passage and were treated to an exuberant humpback that breached. Continuing south, we were in Frederick Sound when we ended our day with a great encounter with a pod of killer whales.

I like to remind people that there are very few big surprises left in life, but if you are out in nature, with an open mind and a lot of time, you never know what you will find.

Ideal Cove and Thomas Bay
An authentic Alaskan experience includes rain; today, we had an authentic experience for twenty-four hours straight. Our morning hikes took us through a stunning temperate rainforest, made possible by the liquid sunshine that characterizes this region. Everything dripped, and waterfalls increased in volume by the hour. The afternoon included a watercolor session led by Kimberly Wood, and a presentation on whales by Erica Wirth. Five intrepid guests signed up for a Zodiac tour in the continuous downpour, and their bravery was rewarded — they saw at least fifteen bald eagles, nosed up a creek, waved to curious harbor seals, and viewed National Geographic Sea Lion amidst literal mist. Rain creates this place, and today we soaked up that reality.

Wrangell
Today guests enjoyed an awesome day in the town of Wrangell. Groups split up for different activities including hiking Mount Dewey, e-biking, visiting Chief Shakes for a cultural experience, exploring petroglyph beach, and visiting the bears at Anan. The group who went to Anan also saw killer whales along the way, and a mink eating salmon. They wrapped up the day with recaps, dinner, and a geological presentation.
