This morning we woke up anchored next to a shield volcano named Chinese Hat, where we stretched before breakfast on a small white sandy beach. We kayaked, stand-up paddleboarded, snorkeled, and took a Zodiac ride along the canal between James and Chinese Hat Islands.
Next, we sailed to James Island where we visited Sullivan Bay, a huge pahoehoe lava field created from an eruption in 1897. This walk revealed the multiple forms fresh lava takes, and imprints of vegetation that were vaporized by the molten lava as well as endemic flora that colonizes lava fields. We ended the day with a BBQ dinner on the sun deck.
