Today, after a well-deserved rest, we started our expedition with high spirits in the spectacular Upper Amazon.
Right after breakfast we went for a hike in the vicinity of the San Jose community in an area known as Casual. With rubber boots on our feet and with the company of three local native scouts from the community we explored a well-maintained “terra firme” rain forest trail. This outing served, with the help of the interpretation of our naturalists, as an introduction to fascinating dynamics of the tropical rain forests. We observed several frog and lizard species that our native scouts spotted. We saw a pink-toed tarantula as well. The icing of the cake was the unusual spotting of a juvenile anaconda. After these activities we had a couple of introductory talks, one on the Amazon region and one on the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve.
In the afternoon, after lunch, we explored the Pucate River, which is a black water tributary of the Marañon River. In this area several bird species and some three-toed sloths were spotted.
Late in the afternoon with the company of a spectacular sunset, we returned to the ship with unforgettable memories of our first full day of our expedition this week in the Peruvian Upper Amazon aboard the Delfin II.
