Today was our first day sailing across the Scotia Sea on our way to the Falkland Islands from South Georgia. Sea days are always the perfect time to reflect on the amazing journey we’ve had so far, as well as catch up on editing photos (and perhaps some sleep) of course. With calm cruising conditions, we enjoyed several presentations from our Expedition Staff team – from Southern Ocean oceanography with Joe Holliday, to the secret life of Antarctic krill with Maya Santangelo, ice on earth with Rob Edwards, and the story of reindeer on South Georgia with Carl Erik Kilander. Today’s presentations featured everything from a live demonstration of ancient geology and ice formation using cookies, to learning that one of our team members has their photograph on a postage stamp!

As we sailed in and out of fog all day, we kept our eyes peeled from the windows on the bridge and all around the ship for signs of seabirds and marine mammals. By dinner time, the clouds had lifted for us to enjoy a beautiful sunset, feeling grateful for the luck and magic we’ve experienced so far on this trip, wondering if that would continue long enough for the much-anticipated total solar eclipse event early tomorrow morning.
