The last day of our super week with our guests on the Columbia and Snake River was in Astoria, Oregon. After arriving at Pier 2 in the early morning hours, we boarded buses to our various destinations and then reversed the trips in the afternoon.
One group went the two miles to the Columbia River Maritime Museum and the majestic Astoria Column. The second group made a 35-minute trip to experience Cape Disappointment and its windswept vistas of the Pacific Ocean and the 1856 Cape Disappointment Lighthouse. In doing so, we also passed the Lewis and Clark Expedition sites of Dismal Nitch, Middle Village/Station Camp, and the later settlement of McGowan. We even talked about the location on Stringtown Road where the expedition shot a California condor in 1805.
In the early evening National Geographic Sea Bird cast off from Pier 2 in Astoria headed to Portland, Oregon for tomorrow’s disembarkation. This is an event that is always brimming with fond farewells after a week filled with wonderful connections, wonderful sights, and wonderful wine.
