Our expedition continued today with a visit to the Amazon Natural Park. This private protected area is the outside boundaries of the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. The late owner Mr. Rotondo managed his property to swell that it was recognized by the Peruvian environmental authorities as a national private protected area.
We started our activities in this area by boarding three catamarans. We crossed a lagoon by rowing peacefully. After a short ride we disembarked to go for a 2.4 miles hike. Some guests opted to go for a shorter walk. While walking in the forest we admired the large rubber tree and some lianas, vines, and some wildflowers as well. The trail leads to a very long suspension bridge approximately a quarter of a mile in length. From the bridge, we had a breathtaking view of the middle strata of the forest just below the upper canopy. At that height we could see the rainforest from a completely different perspective. After the walks we boarded the catamarans to come back to the skiffs, waiting to take us home to the Delfin II.
In the early afternoon, we had a marvelous sighting at a relatively close range. The ship was tied up along the riverbank with many small trees around. In one of the trees, we observed a greater kiskadee nest. It was very amusing to see how solicitous both bird parents were, constantly bringing food to their chicks. I spent a long time looking for the right angle to photograph this event.
In the afternoon after the last skiff ride of the expedition, we had a farewell cocktail and watched the guests’ slideshow of the week. While watching the pictures, our guests relived memories that will be treasured forever.
