A legend of both her time and today, the 30-cabin Sea Cloud was built in 1931 for the heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post. The last of the private tall ships, she carries 30 sails, which are raised by hand as you venture out to sea. Settle into the banquette of the “blue lagoon,” or enjoy refreshments at the covered Lido Bar. Every detail—from the marble fireplaces to the French antiques—reflects the extravagant charms of American royalty.
Inspired by her splendid predecessor, Sea Cloud II celebrates the time-honored traditions of her fleet: the hand-raising of her sails and nightly sundowners on deck. She combines the elegance of a classic square-rigger and the spaciousness of a contemporary vessel, with each of the 44 outward-facing cabins outfitted in modernized amenities. Expansive outdoor viewing areas tempt guests to savor the romance of traveling under billowing sail.

Our expedition throughout the natural and cultural gems of Italy came to its climax today in Syracusa. During the Greek period, it was the capital of Sicily, where the arts flourished during the reigns of tyrants such as Gelon, Dionysios, and Hieron. The archaeological remains of Syracusa include the great limestone quarries, Greek theatre, and Roman amphitheatre, all of which is now complimented by gardens and groves. As we walk through the park, we learned about the great personalities and struggles of the ancient world. Further to the south, the coastal reserve of Vendicari was an oasis of natural wetlands which hosts numerous bird and reptile species. After lunch aboard National Geographic Orion , we headed out for a walking tour of Ortigia, where the city’s oldest temples are still standing today. The Duomo di Siracusa, the city cathedral, is built around the 6th century BC Temple to Athena. This particular place of worship has been active for over 2,500 years and embodies the many chapters of Sicily’s tumultuous history in a single monument. After a fine meal on the ship, we gathered in the lounge to experience the finest crew show in the fleet!
After passing through the famous Straits of Messina yesterday evening, we came ashore on the second Italian Island of our journey, the largest and perhaps the most famous of them all, Sicily. This morning, we landed in the Bay of Naxos at the foot of the great volcano Etna, and made our way up the narrow, winding roads to the beautiful little town of Taormina. Local guides introduced us to the region as we ascended the steep hillsides above the bay, then led us through the lovely small squares, with bright flowers and beautiful little shops of the town. After some free time for shopping and gelato, we reboarded the coaches and rode out of town to the historic villa of Castello degli Schiavi where we enjoyed hors d’oeuvres in the sunshine followed by a fantastic Italian lunch in the amazing vaulted cellar of the villa.
Today was our first day using Zodiacs to get ashore. Fortunately, we had fair weather and clear skies, making our ride into port pleasant for all. Once ashore, we boarded buses and enjoyed the scenic ride through the Sardinian countryside. Our first stop was a set of ancient ruins created by the Nuraghe. These striking structures date back thousands of years and left guests with a sense of awe as we pondered their origins. Next, we ventured to our second archaeological site, Li Lolghi’s Giants’ Tomb. This structure is 27 m long. It was a symbol of land possession and asserted the importance of those buried below. The site is neatly nested below a large vineyard, which creates a dramatic backdrop. After a short stop in Baja Sardinia, we returned to port to re-embark National Geographic Orion . Once on board, we enjoyed some down time and a fantastic presentation from Benedetta Gori, a visiting National Geographic specialist.
Calm waters greeted National Geographic Orion as we cruised from Sardinia towards the Italian mainland today. A series of lectures, an outdoor lunch in the beautiful Mediterranean springtime, and wildlife watching filled the hours until early afternoon, when our first cruising destination came into view: the volcanic island of Stromboli, a 3,031-ft stratovolcano with two active craters that erupt continuously several times a minute! Fortunately, these eruptions are relatively mild, allowing our ship to sail by safely and take in the phenomenal landscape. Evening brought us to the Strait of Messina, a narrow and tumultuous gap between southern Italy and Sicily that made for formidable sailing for early Mediterranean explorers. Her terrors are now more the stuff of legend, most famously the story of Scylla and Charybdis in “The Odyssey.” Still, it’s never a bad idea to keep an eye out for sea monsters…
We woke up to a glorious and sunny morning in Corsica with National Geographic Orion docked beside the steep limestone massif of Bonifacio. At the very southern tip of the island, this charming medieval town combined an ideal defensive position with a sheltered deep-water harbor. The island fell under the dominion of Genoa in the late 13th century and remained so for hundreds of years. We disembarked and split up to take in the environment on various adventures. One group took local boats to explore the stunning cliff formations and natural caves. Some guests hiked along the top of the headlands to take in the wild flora and amazing views. Others took a leisurely walk through the old town itself, learning its history and exploring its fortifications. Still others ventured inland to visit the medieval town of Sartene and explore a Bronze Age fortress. After our morning excursions, we headed to an organic farm estate. A fantastic Corsican lunch was served with stew, cheeses, and pastries, all of which was sourced from the estate itself. From farm to table, via the shortest route possible!
There’s nothing sacrificed by having this traditional relationship with sailing. This is the height of luxury; and the height of luxury these days, in many ways, is arguably, your ability to get away from it all.
