Tarsicio Antezana

A native of Chile, Tarsicio studied marine biology at the University of Chile and oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where he earned M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. He has participated in several scientific cruises to the equatorial and South Pacific, Antarctic, Humboldt Current and Chilean Fjord regions. He has spent most of his professional life as a professor of the universities of Chile and of Concepcion, studying open ocean ecology, krill biology, jack-mackerel and sea lions. He is the author of numerous scientific studies and mentor of many undergraduates and graduates in marine biology and oceanography. He has been a member of national and international scientific programs, and chairman of a graduate university program and an international network of universities in the field of oceanography.

Recently retired, he and his family alternate summers between Chiloe islands, where he is involved in the conservation of traditions and marine environments, and La Jolla, San Diego, where he is completing scientific studies on krill. He has been a recipient of study and research grants from USAID, OAS, UCSD, Ford Foundation, UNESCO, UNDP, IDRC-Canada, SAREC and Linnaeus-Palme-Sweden, British Council, European Union, etc.

A keen interest in nature and a devotion to sharing scientific knowledge and cultural experiences has brought Tato to selected Lindblad-National Geographic expeditions for more than a decade.
