Isaí Madriz
R. Isaí Madriz is an entomologist and photographer with expertise in the freshwater aquatic insects of Patagonia. Using a bamboo bicycle and a pack raft, he conducts solo research expeditions to seek out and describe new species, glacier-dependent organisms and relict groups—also known as living fossils. Hiking along pristine fjords and forests with over 66 lbs (30 kilos) of equipment on his back, Isaí studies the unique Gondwanan biodiversity of the region, documenting its fragile ecosystems and vulnerable wildlife. To encourage conservation in this area, he also writes stories about science, exploration and vanishing insect diversity, using macrophotography to showcase the 6-legged jewels of Patagonia. In addition to his research and photography, Isaí creates free educational materials for rural schools across the region.
