Giovanni Chimienti

Giovanni Chimienti is a marine biologist at the University of Bari (Italy) and a National Geographic Explorer. His studies are mostly focused on corals all over the world, from tropical to temperate areas, from coral reefs to deep-sea coral habitats. He has been part of several scientific expeditions and led a series of explorations searching for unseen coral habitats, new species and biodiversity oasis through scuba diving and, at greater depths, using remotely operated vehicles and submersibles.

He collaborates with FAO for the United Nations as a coral expert, with UNESCO, and with IUCN as member of the World Commission on Protected Areas.

He loves sharing what he knows and learning new things by looking around. Fascinated by all forms of life, he is particularly intrigued by marine animals and never says no to scuba diving or snorkeling. You may find him in the weirdest places collecting biological samples or taking photographs of bizarre animals.

Chimienti has received several prestigious scientific awards for his research and explorations, including from the Lincei Academy, the Mediterranean Science Commission, the Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas, the Deep-Sea Biology Society, the PES Foundation and Prince Albert II of Monaco.
